During the period of the 1950s-1960s, the Army often formed
temporary details or limited formations from whatever manpower
was immediately available, regardless of normal duty or
assignment. This aggregation of "warm bodies" existed solely for
the function assembled, and was immediately disbanded upon
completion. This technique was similar to a "pick-up" team formed
to play a "scratch" game in some spontaneous sports event. These
troops were "commandeered" into temporary muster, but there was a
slang term for this act, and for this assembly ... what was it?
During the period of the 1950s-1960s, a primitive but effective
encryption / decryption device called a KAK WHEEL was carried by
the RTO for encoding / decoding in the field. By the end of the
Vietnam War, built-in coders and scramblers made the KAK WHEEL
obsolete. What was the literal meaning of "KAK"?
During the period of the Vietnam War, troops being deployed from
stateside were classified as "A packet", "B packet", or "C
packet". What was the meaning of these categories? Did they
pertain to individuals or units? Was the classification by MOS,
by area, by size, or what? How long did this categorization last
... approximately from when to when?
Two early USAF advice and training projects, called "Jungle Jim"
and "Farmgate", utilized USAF advisors and Air Commandos. Can
someone provide precise definitions and operational dates for
these Southeast Asia projects?
The phrase: "turn the jack" seemingly means to defend against a
salient thrust by both forward and flank fire; but what is its
origin and import?
