Select Bibliography
"Read the best books first, or you may not have a chance to read
them at all."
by Henry David Thoreau [Sunday A
Week on the Concord and Merrimack Rivers (1849)]
This select bibliography is neither
representative nor exhaustive. It endeavors to cite the
best works on each topic, but cannot substitute for a
detailed investigation by an interested student or devoted
scholar. For anyone unacquainted, these topical citations refer
the uninformed reader to interesting and reliable resources.
Within each category, the citations are grouped and alphabetized.
The prospective reader will never be proffered more suggestions
merely for the sake of completeness or balance. This
select bibliography offers our best
recommendations for understanding combat.

they take away a few things they can use, dirty and confound the
remainder, and revile the whole."
